Gorilla Trekking β Rwanda vs Uganda
Mountain gorillas in two countries, two experiences, two price points. Here is how to choose.
The Short Answer
Rwanda is easier, shorter, and more luxurious β but costs $1,500 for the permit. Uganda is harder, longer, and more adventurous β but costs $700. Both offer the same gorillas, the same one-hour encounter, and the same profound emotional experience.
If budget is not a constraint, choose Rwanda. If you want adventure and value, choose Uganda.

Head-to-Head Comparison
Rwanda (Volcanoes NP)
- β’ Permit: $1,500 per person

- β’ Access: 2 hours from Kigali
- β’ Lodges: Ultra-luxury (Singita, One&Only)
- β’ Groups: Max 8 visitors per gorilla family
- β’ Best for: Comfort, time-pressed travelers, luxury seekers
Uganda (Bwindi)
- β’ Permit: $700 per person
- β’ Trek: 3-8 hours, steep jungle
- β’ Access: 8-10 hours from Entebbe, or fly to Kisoro
- β’ Lodges: Range from basic to luxury
- β’ Groups: Max 8 visitors per gorilla family
- β’ Best for: Adventure, budget, longer itineraries
The Trekking Experience
Rwanda: The trek starts from the park headquarters at the base of the Virunga volcanoes. Trails are relatively clear, and altitudes range from 2,400m to 3,500m. Porters are available to carry your bag. The terrain is bamboo forest and open moorland β beautiful and manageable.
Uganda: Bwindi is thicker, wetter, and steeper. The forest is true jungle β dense vegetation, mud, and steep slopes. Treks are longer and more physically demanding. But the setting feels more remote and wild.
The Gorilla Encounter
Once you find the gorillas, both countries allow one hour of observation. The experience is identical: a silverback, several females, juveniles playing, and perhaps a baby clinging to its mother. The proximity (often just 5-7 meters) is breathtaking.
Uganda offers the gorilla habituation experience β a 4-hour visit with researchers and a less-habituated group. This is available only in Uganda and costs $1,500.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Rwanda if:
- You have limited time (can be done in a 3-day weekend from Europe)
- You want luxury accommodation
- You prefer easier trekking
- Budget is not the primary concern
Choose Uganda if:
- You want better value for money
- You enjoy challenging, adventurous trekking
- You want to combine with other Ugandan experiences (Queen Elizabeth NP, Murchison Falls)
- You want the 4-hour habituation experience
The Bottom Line
There is no wrong choice. Both Rwanda and Uganda offer life-changing gorilla encounters. The difference is in the journey, the cost, and the comfort β not the destination.
