For peak season trekking (June–September and December–February), gorilla permits in Rwanda sell out 9–12 months ahead, sometimes faster for specific popular families like Susa or Pablo. We recommend securing permits the moment you confirm international flights — not after. The permit purchase is non-refundable, which means your international flight dates need to be reasonably certain before committing. We hold permit allocations that give us access to dates that are otherwise fully booked through the Rwanda Development Board's public portal. For shoulder season (March–May, October–November), 3–6 months ahead is typically sufficient, but specific family preferences may still require early booking. We handle the full permit procurement process — you provide dates and fitness notes, we secure the permits and assign the appropriate gorilla family.

Gorilla trekking requires a minimum age of 15 years — this is strictly enforced by the Rwanda Development Board and applies to all visitors regardless of circumstances. Families with younger travelers have excellent alternatives in Rwanda: golden monkey tracking (suitable for children 8+), Lake Kivu kayaking and island adventures, Akagera National Park game drives and boat safaris where children are welcome, and Tanzania mobile camps designed for families. Many of our clients traveling with younger children split their time — adults trek gorillas while the younger members enjoy supervised activities with our guides. We can arrange child-minding services at lodges and coordinate parallel itineraries that reunite the family each evening.

Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest, and Lake Kivu sit at high elevation (1,500–2,500 meters) with low malaria risk — many travelers visiting only these destinations choose not to take prophylaxis, instead focusing on mosquito avoidance. However, if your itinerary includes Akagera National Park (lower elevation savannah), Serengeti, or coastal Zanzibar extensions, we strongly advise antimalarial prophylaxis plus DEET-based repellent. Recommended options include Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine — consult your travel medicine physician 4–6 weeks before departure. Regardless of your itinerary, we recommend bringing DEET-based repellent, wearing long sleeves at dawn/dusk, and sleeping under insecticide-treated nets (provided at all lodges).

The herds spend 8–9 months within Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem — calving in the southern plains (January–March), crossing the Grumeti River (May–July), and staging the dramatic Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti (July–October). Kenya's Masai Mara is outstanding during the July–October dry season, especially in the private conservancies that offer night drives and off-road privileges. Many experienced safari travelers combine both countries. Our position as a Tanzania-based operator with Rwanda expertise: we know the Serengeti's seasonal patterns intimately and can time your visit to coincide with the most active migration moments. The Great Migration is a year-round phenomenon within Tanzania — the question is not whether to choose Tanzania or Kenya, but which season and which specific region offers the best experience for your dates.

Gorilla treks involve steep, muddy slopes at 2,500–3,500 meters elevation. Moderate fitness with porter assistance is sufficient for most trekkers — you should be able to walk 2–3 hours on uneven terrain. The trek difficulty varies significantly by assigned gorilla family: some families range near park boundaries (30-minute trek), while others roam higher elevations (4–5 hour trek). During pre-trek briefing, rangers assign families based on stated fitness levels and preferences. Porters are available to carry daypacks and provide physical assistance on difficult sections. For Akagera and Serengeti portions of your itinerary, safaris are vehicle-based with minimal physical demand. Share any mobility concerns with us during planning — we can request specific families, arrange additional porters, or suggest sedan-chair assistance if needed.

Our scheduled group departures are capped at seven guests, guaranteeing every seat is a window seat in our extended Land Cruisers. This small-group format creates an intimate safari experience where you get to know your guide, move quickly when wildlife action unfolds, and avoid the logistical delays that plague larger groups. Private departures start with two guests and can mirror the same itineraries or be fully bespoke. Group departures confirm once four guests are booked, typically 6–8 weeks prior to departure.
