Why Trail Safari Explorers

Gorillas, Migration & Everything Between

Rwanda's gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 and is non-refundable once issued. Getting it right — the right gorilla family for your fitness level, the right sector, the right trek difficulty — matters more here than almost any other safari purchase. We have trekked with all 12 Volcanoes families, know which guides work best for different traveller profiles, and hold permit allocations that allow us to secure dates before you confirm international flights. The rest of the Rwanda circuit — Nyungwe, Akagera, Lake Kivu — we cover with the same on-the-ground knowledge. Contact our team to discuss your itinerary.

Legendary Gorilla Encounters

Only 96 gorilla permits release daily—but our on-the-ground team holds priority allocations and matches each traveler with suitable gorilla families, fitness levels, and expert trackers.

Beyond Primates

Akagera’s restored savannahs, Lake Kivu’s islands, Nyungwe’s canopy walkway, and Kigali’s cultural renaissance deliver a full-spectrum safari before you even cross into Tanzania.

Migration Timing Expertise

We track herd movements, rainfall, and river crossings in real time, crafting itineraries that flow from gorilla nurseries to calving grounds or Mara River drama without wasted days.

Intimate, Tanzanian-Owned Guiding

Maximum seven guests, every seat a window seat, and driver-guides whose families have tracked these routes for generations ensure personal attention and conservation-first storytelling.

Permits & Pricing

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Cost — Permits, Packages & What to Budget

The Rwanda mountain gorilla trekking permit costs USD $1,500 per person per trek. This is set by the Rwanda Development Board and applies to all visitors regardless of nationality, operator, or lodge. The permit covers one gorilla trekking session with a maximum of eight trekkers and one hour of viewing time once the family is located. Trek duration varies — from 30 minutes to 5 hours of walking depending on where the gorilla family nested the night before — but the viewing time itself is always one hour. The permit is non-refundable and must be secured in advance.

Uganda's mountain gorilla permit costs $800 — $700 less than Rwanda's. For a couple, this is a $1,400 saving in permit fees alone. The honest answer to whether the premium is worth it: Rwanda offers significantly easier logistics (Kigali is 2.5 hours from Volcanoes NP, versus 8–9 hours from Kampala to Bwindi), a higher concentration of gorilla families in a more compact area, and generally shorter trek approaches. Uganda offers more gorilla families across four sectors, the gorilla habituation experience (4 hours instead of 1), and a richer wider wildlife circuit. For travellers based in Europe or connecting through Nairobi, Rwanda is often the more efficient choice. For those wanting maximum value or combining with Uganda, starting in Uganda makes more sense. Beyond the gorilla permit, Rwanda's other primate permits are affordable: golden monkey tracking costs $100 per person, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe costs $100 per person. Akagera National Park entry costs approximately $40 per person per day. Rwanda requires no visa for citizens of many countries (Rwanda Development Board maintains the current list); others pay $50 on arrival. Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda — pack reusable dry bags instead of standard zipper bags.

Itinerary Planning

Planning Your Rwanda Circuit — Which Experiences to Combine

Rwanda is compact — Kigali to Volcanoes is 2.5 hours; Volcanoes to Nyungwe is 4–5 hours; Nyungwe to Akagera via Kigali is 5 hours. A 7-day circuit can cover gorillas, chimps, and Big Five. A 10-day circuit adds Lake Kivu and Kigali. Here is how to build yours.

4–5 days

The Gorilla-First

For travellers with limited time or a specific gorilla focus. Fly into Kigali, spend one night acclimatising at a Kigali boutique hotel (altitude adjustment is modest but the body benefits from rest before the trek), transfer to Volcanoes National Park foothills for 2–3 nights. Gorilla trekking on day two. Optional golden monkey tracking on day three. Return to Kigali for departure or Tanzania flight connection. This is the minimum viable Rwanda experience — exceptional, but those who do it almost always wish they had stayed longer.

Best for: time-constrained travellers, those connecting to Tanzania

7 days

The Primate Circuit

The most popular Rwanda itinerary. Two nights near Volcanoes NP for gorilla and golden monkey trekking, a scenic transfer via Lake Kivu viewpoints to Nyungwe Forest for two nights, then a dawn chimpanzee trek and the canopy walkway. Seven days covers all three primate experiences and gives enough time at each location to feel unhurried. Optional Kigali Cultural Day at the start for orientation and the Genocide Memorial. This is the circuit we recommend for first-time Rwanda visitors who want a complete picture of the country's primate richness.

Best for: first-time Rwanda visitors, primate enthusiasts, photographers

10 days

Rwanda Complete

Adds Akagera National Park's Big Five to the primate circuit — two nights on Lake Ihema's shores for game drives and the legendary boat safari past hippos, shoebill storks, and 500+ bird species. Rwanda's restored savannah ecosystem, managed by African Parks since 2010, is genuinely remarkable — lions and black rhino were reintroduced from scratch and now thrive alongside 13,500 large mammals. A 10-day circuit that covers gorillas, chimps, Big Five, and Lake Kivu is one of East Africa's most diverse single-country experiences.

Best for: Big Five seekers, birders, travellers with 10+ days who want to stay in one country

12–16 days

Rwanda + Tanzania

The combination that defines our Rwanda operation. Rwanda for gorillas and primates; Tanzania for the Great Migration, Ngorongoro's Big Five, and Tarangire's elephant mega-herds. A single domestic flight connects Kigali to Kilimanjaro or Serengeti's seasonal airstrips — approximately 2 hours in the air. The contrast between Volcanoes' dense bamboo forest and the Serengeti's open plains, experienced within a single trip, is one of the most satisfying wildlife itinerary combinations in Africa. We time Rwanda at the start of a trip (allowing Tanzania wildlife to build on the gorilla experience) or at the end (Zanzibar beach between the two).

Best for: first-time East Africa visitors wanting the complete experience, repeat Tanzania visitors adding Rwanda for the first time

The access question

Rwanda wins on access, and for most travellers this is the decisive factor. Kigali International Airport has direct flights from London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and multiple African hubs. From Nairobi, Rwanda is a 45-minute flight. From the airport, Volcanoes National Park is 2.5 hours by road — a comfortable afternoon transfer that arrives in time for a lodge dinner and pre-trek briefing. Uganda's Entebbe airport has good connections but the drive to Bwindi is 8–9 hours, or a charter flight to a small airstrip — adding cost and a travel day. For travellers with 7–10 days and limited tolerance for road time, Rwanda is the practical choice. See our Uganda safaris for the full picture.

The permit cost question

Uganda is $700 per permit cheaper. For a couple doing single treks each, that's $1,400 in direct permit savings — enough to fund two or three additional nights of quality accommodation. The honest Rwanda answer to this: you are paying partly for infrastructure (Rwanda's park roads, briefing facilities, and ranger service are excellent), partly for family selection quality (Rwanda's 12 families are all well-habituated with predictable daily ranges), and partly for access efficiency. If budget is a primary concern, Uganda gives you the same one-hour gorilla encounter at a lower permit cost, in a park that is genuinely excellent — just less convenient to reach. Compare Uganda gorilla trekking options.

The gorilla experience question

Both countries deliver the same fundamental encounter: one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat, accompanied by a trained tracker and ranger. The difference is in the families themselves. Rwanda's 12 families include some of the most intensely habituated gorilla groups in the world — Susa (the largest, 28+ individuals), Pablo, and Amahoro are famous among gorilla researchers. Uganda's 19 Bwindi families offer more choice across different ecosystems and difficulty levels. Neither country's gorillas are "better" — the encounter quality depends far more on which family you're assigned and which rangers are leading your group than on which country you're in.

The gorilla habituation question

Uganda offers something Rwanda does not: the gorilla habituation experience at Bwindi's Rushaga sector. For $1,500 (the same price as Rwanda's standard permit), trekkers spend four hours — not one — with a semi-habituated gorilla family that is in the process of being acclimatised to human presence. The experience is more research-focused, more intimate, and more physically demanding than a standard trek. For travellers who have already done standard gorilla trekking in Rwanda and want to go deeper, Uganda's habituation experience is the logical next step. Rwanda has no equivalent. Learn more about Uganda's gorilla experiences.

Our recommendation

For a first gorilla trek: Rwanda if you're time-constrained or routing through Nairobi; Uganda if you're combining with a Tanzania circuit and want to save on permits. For a second gorilla trek: Uganda's habituation experience or a different Bwindi sector. For the complete East Africa circuit: Rwanda first (gorillas + primates + Akagera), then Tanzania (migration + parks), either as a 12-day trip or two separate trips. We design both and handle the logistics from permit application through to departure gate. View our 4-day Rwanda gorilla safari or Tanzania safari options.

FAQs

Your Questions Answered

How far in advance should I secure gorilla permits?+

For peak season trekking (June–September and December–February), gorilla permits in Rwanda sell out 9–12 months ahead, sometimes faster for specific popular families like Susa or Pablo. We recommend securing permits the moment you confirm international flights — not after. The permit purchase is non-refundable, which means your international flight dates need to be reasonably certain before committing. We hold permit allocations that give us access to dates that are otherwise fully booked through the Rwanda Development Board's public portal. For shoulder season (March–May, October–November), 3–6 months ahead is typically sufficient, but specific family preferences may still require early booking. We handle the full permit procurement process — you provide dates and fitness notes, we secure the permits and assign the appropriate gorilla family.

Can children participate?+

Gorilla trekking requires a minimum age of 15 years — this is strictly enforced by the Rwanda Development Board and applies to all visitors regardless of circumstances. Families with younger travelers have excellent alternatives in Rwanda: golden monkey tracking (suitable for children 8+), Lake Kivu kayaking and island adventures, Akagera National Park game drives and boat safaris where children are welcome, and Tanzania mobile camps designed for families. Many of our clients traveling with younger children split their time — adults trek gorillas while the younger members enjoy supervised activities with our guides. We can arrange child-minding services at lodges and coordinate parallel itineraries that reunite the family each evening.

Do I need malaria prophylaxis?+

Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest, and Lake Kivu sit at high elevation (1,500–2,500 meters) with low malaria risk — many travelers visiting only these destinations choose not to take prophylaxis, instead focusing on mosquito avoidance. However, if your itinerary includes Akagera National Park (lower elevation savannah), Serengeti, or coastal Zanzibar extensions, we strongly advise antimalarial prophylaxis plus DEET-based repellent. Recommended options include Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine — consult your travel medicine physician 4–6 weeks before departure. Regardless of your itinerary, we recommend bringing DEET-based repellent, wearing long sleeves at dawn/dusk, and sleeping under insecticide-treated nets (provided at all lodges).

Is it better to see the Migration in Tanzania or Kenya?+

The herds spend 8–9 months within Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem — calving in the southern plains (January–March), crossing the Grumeti River (May–July), and staging the dramatic Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti (July–October). Kenya's Masai Mara is outstanding during the July–October dry season, especially in the private conservancies that offer night drives and off-road privileges. Many experienced safari travelers combine both countries. Our position as a Tanzania-based operator with Rwanda expertise: we know the Serengeti's seasonal patterns intimately and can time your visit to coincide with the most active migration moments. The Great Migration is a year-round phenomenon within Tanzania — the question is not whether to choose Tanzania or Kenya, but which season and which specific region offers the best experience for your dates.

What fitness level is required?+

Gorilla treks involve steep, muddy slopes at 2,500–3,500 meters elevation. Moderate fitness with porter assistance is sufficient for most trekkers — you should be able to walk 2–3 hours on uneven terrain. The trek difficulty varies significantly by assigned gorilla family: some families range near park boundaries (30-minute trek), while others roam higher elevations (4–5 hour trek). During pre-trek briefing, rangers assign families based on stated fitness levels and preferences. Porters are available to carry daypacks and provide physical assistance on difficult sections. For Akagera and Serengeti portions of your itinerary, safaris are vehicle-based with minimal physical demand. Share any mobility concerns with us during planning — we can request specific families, arrange additional porters, or suggest sedan-chair assistance if needed.

How small are the groups on scheduled departures?+

Our scheduled group departures are capped at seven guests, guaranteeing every seat is a window seat in our extended Land Cruisers. This small-group format creates an intimate safari experience where you get to know your guide, move quickly when wildlife action unfolds, and avoid the logistical delays that plague larger groups. Private departures start with two guests and can mirror the same itineraries or be fully bespoke. Group departures confirm once four guests are booked, typically 6–8 weeks prior to departure. We hold weekly seats on our Comfort Retreat and Grumeti Signature itineraries — contact us for current availability. Solo travelers can join group departures at standard rates or opt for private departures with a single supplement.
