Overview

The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola Route", is the only path with hut accommodation. It's the oldest and most established route, making it popular for those who prefer not to camp. The direct path offers a straightforward approach to the summit.

Mandara Hut

Register at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, then hike through pristine rainforest. A worthwhile side trip to Maundi Crater reveals sweeping views north into Kenya. Colobus monkeys and lobelias are common sights.

Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest and climb through open moorland with extraordinary views of Mawenzi and Kibo. Giant lobelias and groundsels line the path. First altitude effects may appear here.

Kibo Hut

Cross the lunar saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation fades into bare volcanic rock as you enter the alpine desert zone.

Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Midnight start up steep scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then a final push along the rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend all the way back to Horombo Hut.

Marangu Gate

Long but steady descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Summit certificates issued here.

Day Trip Option

Mandara Hut Trail & Return

Following breakfast at your hotel, you are met by your guide and driven to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (approximately one hour). After registering, the trail heads up through lush montane rainforest to Mandara Hut. A short detour to Maundi Crater offers panoramic views across northern Tanzania and into Kenya. Keep an eye out for towering trees, colourful birdlife and black-and-white Colobus monkeys along the way. After lunch at the hut, you retrace your steps back to the park gate and return to Moshi by vehicle.
