Overview
The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It receives less rainfall, making it a great option during wet seasons. The northern approach offers a unique perspective of the mountain.

Simba Camp
Begin from the northern side and trek through pine plantations to Simba Camp.
Elevation: 2,000m – 2,600m | Distance: 8 km | Time: 3–4 hrs
Second Cave / Kikelewa
Trek through moorland with views of Kibo and the Kenyan plains.
Elevation: 2,600m – 3,450m | Distance: 6 km | Time: 5–6 hrs
Mawenzi Tarn
Continue through alpine desert to camp beneath Mawenzi Peak.
Elevation: 3,450m – 4,300m | Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hrs
Kibo Hut
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo.
Elevation: 4,300m – 4,700m | Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hrs
Uhuru Peak → Horombo
Midnight departure to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo.
Elevation: 4,700m – 5,895m – 3,700m | Distance: 21 km | Time: 14–16 hrs
Marangu Gate
Descend to exit and transfer to Moshi/Arusha.
Elevation: 3,700m – 1,700m | Distance: 20 km | Time: 5–6 hrs
