Best Time to Visit Tanzania — Safari, Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar
A month-by-month breakdown of weather, wildlife, migration movements, and prices to help you choose your perfect travel window.
Overview
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but timing your visit makes a significant differenceto what you see, how much you pay, and what the weather feels like. The country's two main seasons — dry and green (wet) — each offer distinct advantages depending on your priorities.
The dry season (June to October) is the most popular time for safaris. Wildlife congregates around water sources, making animals easier to spot. Vegetation is thinner, and the weather is cooler. This is also when the Great Migrationriver crossings occur in the northern Serengeti.
The green season (November to May) offers lush landscapes, dramatic skies, incredible birdwatching, and significantly lower prices. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti — a predator spectacle unmatched anywhere on Earth.

Dry Season: June to October
The dry season is Tanzania's peak safari period, and for good reason. With little rain, animals gather around permanent water sources, roads are easily passable, and the risk of malaria is lower due to fewer mosquitoes.
Wildlife highlights: The Great Migration crosses the Mara River (July–October). Predator action is at its peak as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas take advantage of concentrated prey. In Tarangire, enormous elephant herds gather along the Tarangire River.
Downsides: Prices are highest, lodges book out months in advance, and popular areas like Ngorongoro Crater can feel crowded. If you are traveling in July or August, book 6-9 months ahead.
Green Season: November to May
The green season divides into two parts: the short rains (November–December) and thelong rains (March–May). Between them lies the calving season (January–March), arguably the most dramatic wildlife spectacle of the year.
Calving season (January–March): Over 500,000 wildebeest give birth in the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti. Predator activity is extraordinary — it is not uncommon to see multiple kills in a single day. The landscape is lush and green, and prices are 30-50% lower than peak season.
Long rains (March–May): Heavy afternoon rains make some roads impassable, but mornings are often clear. This is the quietest time — you may have entire sections of the Serengeti to yourself. Lodges offer their best deals of the year.

Month-by-Month Breakdown
January – February
Calving season. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest births in the southern Serengeti. Peak predator action. Warm weather.
March – April
Long rains begin. Herds move northwest. Lowest prices, fewest tourists. Some roads may be difficult.
May – June
End of rains. Western corridor migration. Transition to dry season. Excellent value before peak prices.
July – August
Peak season. Mara River crossings. Coolest weather. Highest prices. Book well in advance.
September – October
Still excellent game viewing. Herds in northern Serengeti/Masai Mara. Great weather continues.
November – December
Short rains. Herds return south. Migratory birds arrive. Good prices. Festive season books early.
When to Climb Kilimanjaro
The best months to climb Kilimanjaro are January–March and June–October. January to March is colder but quieter, with excellent snow cover on the summit. June to October is warmer and drier but busier on the trails.
Avoid April–May (heavy rains) and November (short rains) unless you are experienced with wet-weather trekking. Visibility on the summit is significantly reduced during rainy periods.

When to Visit Zanzibar
Zanzibar's best beach weather coincides with the safari dry season: June to October. Humidity is lower, skies are clear, and the sea is calm — ideal for diving and snorkeling.
December to February is also excellent, though hotter and more humid. The long rains (March–May) bring afternoon downpours, but mornings are usually clear. Many travelers combine a rainy-season safari with a Zanzibar beach break to end on a high note.
