How Many Days for a Tanzania Safari?

From a quick 5-day escape to a comprehensive 14-day adventure β€” find the perfect trip length for your goals, budget, and calendar.

The Short Answer

Minimum 5 days for a taste of Tanzania. 7-10 days for a proper Northern Circuit safari. 12-14 days if you want to add Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, or the remote Southern Circuit. Anything less than 5 days means too much driving and not enough wildlife.

5 Days: The Taster Safari

A 5-day safari is the absolute minimum. It works if you have limited time or are combining with another activity (like Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar). The classic 5-day route is Tarangire β†’ Ngorongoro β†’ Central Serengeti.

Pros: Affordable, manageable, covers the headline parks.

Cons: Rushed, limited time in Serengeti, lots of driving, no room for spontaneity.

Best for: Travelers on a tight schedule or those adding a safari to a Kilimanjaro climb or Zanzibar beach holiday.

7 Days: The Classic Northern Circuit

This is the most popular safari length for good reason. A 7-day itinerary gives you proper time in the Serengeti (3-4 nights), a full day in Ngorongoro Crater, and a stop at Tarangire or Lake Manyara.

Sample 7-day route:

  • Day 1: Arrive Arusha
  • Day 2: Tarangire National Park
  • Day 3: Lake Manyara or drive to Ngorongoro
  • Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater full day
  • Day 5: Serengeti (Central/East)
  • Day 6: Serengeti (game drives)
  • Day 7: Serengeti β†’ fly back to Arusha

Best for: First-timers, families, honeymooners, photographers. The sweet spot of cost, coverage, and experience.

10 Days: The Deep Dive

With 10 days, you can explore the Serengeti in depth β€” moving between different zones as the migration dictates. Add a cultural experience (Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi, Maasai village visit) and still have time for relaxation.

Sample 10-day additions to the classic route:

  • Extra 2-3 days in the Serengeti (Western Corridor or Northern Mara area)
  • Lake Eyasi cultural visit with Hadzabe bushmen
  • Walking safari in Arusha National Park
  • Hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers seeking golden light, travelers wanting a fuller experience without rushing.

12-14 Days: The Complete Tanzania

Two weeks lets you combine the Northern Circuit with Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, or the Southern Circuit's remote parks (Selous/Nyerere and Ruaha). This is the ultimate Tanzania experience β€” bush, beach, and mountain in one trip.

Popular 14-day combinations:

  • Safari + Zanzibar: 7 days Northern Circuit + 5 days beach
  • Safari + Kilimanjaro: 7-day Machame route + 5-day safari
  • Northern + Southern Circuit: 7 days North + 4 days South
  • Grand Tanzania: Safari + Kili + Zanzibar (fast-paced)

Best for: Honeymooners, anniversary trips, once-in-a-lifetime journeys, and travelers with flexible schedules.

Our Recommendation

For most travelers, we recommend 7-8 days on safari plus 2-3 days for arrival/departure buffers. This gives you enough time to see the Serengeti properly, enjoy Ngorongoro without rushing, and still have room for a surprise β€” like a leopard in a tree you would have missed on a tighter schedule.
