Tanzania's Rainy Season β The Green Season Secret
Lower prices, fewer crowds, lush landscapes, and newborn animals. Here is why the rainy season is Africa's best-kept safari secret.
The Two Rainy Seasons
Tanzania has two rainy seasons. The long rains (March-May) bring heavy but brief downpours most afternoons. The short rains (November-December) are lighter, scattered, and less disruptive. Both transform the landscape from gold to emerald.

Why the Green Season Is Worth It
- Dramatic discounts β 30-50% off peak-season rates at many lodges
- Fewer tourists β Sometimes you are the only vehicle at a sighting
- Lush landscapes β The savannah is emerald green, wildflowers bloom, and dust is minimal
- Baby animals β Calving season (Jan-Mar) is technically the green season
- Migratory birds β European and Asian species arrive, making this peak birding season
- Dramatic skies β Storm clouds, rain shafts, and rainbows make for incredible photography
The Challenges
- Wet conditions β Roads can be muddy, especially in April-May
- Some lodges close β Camps in remote areas shut during the wettest months
- Thicker vegetation β Wildlife can be harder to spot in tall grass
- Tsetse flies β More active during the rains, especially in woodlands
- Humidity β Coastal areas (Zanzibar) can be uncomfortably humid
Best Parks During the Rains
- Serengeti (southern plains) β Calving season is the absolute best time to visit. Predator action is extraordinary.
- Ngorongoro Crater β Always reliable, regardless of weather. The crater floor is accessible year-round.
- Tarangire β The green season brings migratory birds and wildflowers. Less crowded than dry season.
- Ruaha β Dramatic thunderstorms over the miombo woodland. Spectacular.
The Bottom Line
The rainy season is not for everyone. But if you value intimacy, value, and dramatic scenery over guaranteed dry weather, the green season is unbeatable. Many experienced safari-goers refuse to travel any other time.
