Mafia Island β Diving, Whale Sharks & Tanzania's Best-Kept Secret
Forget Zanzibar's crowds. Mafia Island offers pristine reefs, whale sharks, and a level of seclusion that feels like the Indian Ocean 30 years ago.
Zanzibar Without the Crowds
Mafia Island is what Zanzibar was before the tourists arrived. No all-inclusive resorts, no beach boys selling tours, no crowds. Just palm-fringed beaches, a protected marine park, and a Swahili fishing community that has changed little in generations.
Located 160 km south of Zanzibar, Mafia is part of the Mafia Archipelago, which includes Chole, Juani, and several smaller islets. The entire archipelago is protected as a marine park β the first in Tanzania.

The Marine Park: A Diver's Paradise
The Mafia Island Marine Park protects some of the healthiest coral reefs in East Africa. Visibility often exceeds 30 meters. The reefs are home to over 400 fish species, plus turtles, dolphins, and the occasional dugong.
Top dive sites:
- Chole Wall β A dramatic drop-off covered in soft corals and gorgonians. Reef sharks, rays, and large groupers.
- Kinasi Pass β Strong currents attract pelagic species. Barracuda, trevally, and reef sharks.
- Blue Lagoon β Shallow, calm, perfect for beginners and snorkelers. Seahorses and nudibranchs.
- Juani Island β Pristine coral gardens with excellent macro life.
Whale Sharks
From October to March, whale sharks β the world's largest fish β congregate in the channel between Mafia and the mainland. These gentle giants, reaching 12 meters in length, feed on plankton near the surface, allowing snorkelers to swim alongside them.
Unlike some whale shark encounters elsewhere, Mafia's are entirely natural. There is no feeding. The sharks come and go as they please, and sightings are not guaranteed β but when they appear, it is magical.
What Else to Do
- Kayak through mangroves β Chole Bay's mangrove channels are peaceful and full of birdlife.
- Visit Chole Island β Ruins of a 12th-century Arab settlement, baobab trees, and a sleepy village atmosphere.
- Sunset dhow cruises β Sail on traditional boats with a cold drink and fresh seafood.
- Birdwatching β Over 120 species, including the rare Fischer's turaco.
- Fishing β Deep-sea fishing for tuna, wahoo, and kingfish (catch-and-release options available).

Practical Information
Getting there: Daily flights from Dar es Salaam (30 minutes) and Zanzibar (20 minutes). No regular ferry service.
Best time: June to October for calm seas and best diving. October to March for whale sharks. Avoid April-May (heavy rains).
Where to stay: Options are limited and mostly small, eco-friendly lodges. Kinasi Lodge is the most established. Pole Pole is intimate and charming. There are no large resorts.
Who it is for: Divers, snorkelers, honeymooners seeking privacy, and travelers who have already done Zanzibar and want something quieter.
Mafia vs Zanzibar
If Zanzibar is a lively beach party, Mafia is a quiet dinner with old friends. It is not better or worse β just different. Mafia has no nightlife, no shopping, and no crowds. What it has is some of the best diving in East Africa, whale sharks, and a sense of timelessness that is increasingly rare.
