Tanzania National Parks — Ranked

An honest ranking of every major park and reserve. Where to spend your time, money, and expectations.

How We Ranked Them

This ranking considers wildlife density, landscape beauty, uniqueness, accessibility, value, and overall experience. It is subjective, but it is based on decades of guiding experience and thousands of guest feedback forms.

Tier 1: The Essential Parks

1. Serengeti National Park

The greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth. No other park comes close. Expensive, crowded in peak season, and utterly unmissable.

2. Ngorongoro Crater

Guaranteed Big Five in a single day. Dramatic scenery, reliable sightings, and the densest wildlife population in Africa. Crowded but essential.

3. Ruaha National Park

Tanzania's best-kept secret. 10% of Africa's lions, massive elephant herds, wild dogs, and virtually no crowds. The south's crown jewel.

Tier 2: Excellent Additions

4. Tarangire National Park

Elephant paradise, baobab silhouettes, and excellent dry-season game viewing. A perfect complement to Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

5. Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Boat safaris, walking, wild dogs, and Africa's largest game reserve. A completely different experience from the northern circuit.

6. Katavi National Park

Raw, remote, and wild. Buffalo herds of 4,000, hippo pools of 200+, and zero other tourists. For experienced safari-goers only.

Tier 3: Specialist Destinations

7. Mahale Mountains

Chimpanzees on Lake Tanganyika. Extraordinary, expensive, and remote. One of Africa's most unique experiences.

8. Gombe Stream

Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research site. Smaller, steeper, and deeply historic. A pilgrimage for primate enthusiasts.

9. Lake Manyara National Park

Tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and groundwater forest. Beautiful but small. Best as a half-day stop, not a destination.

10. Arusha National Park

Canoe safaris, walking, and Mount Meru views. Underrated and quiet. Perfect for acclimatization or active travelers.

11. Mikumi National Park

Accessible from Dar es Salaam. Good for a short safari but outclassed by Ruaha and Nyerere nearby.

12. Udzungwa Mountains

Hiking and endemic primates. Not a traditional safari park but unique and worthwhile for adventurers.

The Bottom Line

If you have one week, do Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. If you have two weeks, add Ruaha and Nyerere. Everything else is a bonus.
