Udzungwa Mountains β Tanzania's Galapagos
Endemic primates, towering waterfalls, and rainforest hiking in the Eastern Arc Mountains.
The Eastern Arc: A Biodiversity Hotspot
The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient, isolated ranges that have been called "the Galapagos of Africa." Over millions of years of isolation, these mountains have evolved species found nowhere else on Earth.
Udzungwa alone has 12 primate species, including two endemics: the Sanje mangabey and the Udzungwa red colobus. It is the only park in Tanzania where you can reliably see these monkeys.

Hiking in Udzungwa
Unlike most Tanzanian national parks, Udzungwa is a hiking park. There are no game drives β you explore on foot. Trails range from gentle 30-minute walks to strenuous full-day treks.
Popular trails:
- Prince Bernhard Waterfall β 3-4 hours. Moderate. Passes through forest to a 180m waterfall.
- Sanje Trail β Full day. Strenuous. Reaches the top of Sanje Falls with panoramic views over the Kilombero Valley.
- Mwanihana Trail β 2 days. Reaches the second-highest peak. For serious hikers.
Best Time to Visit
June-October is the dry season β trails are firm, leeches are fewer, and visibility is best. November-May is lush and beautiful but wet and muddy.
Getting There
Udzungwa is a 6-hour drive from Dar es Salaam or a 5-hour drive from Ruaha. It is often combined with Ruaha and Mikumi on a southern circuit safari. There is no airstrip β access is by road only.
The Bottom Line
Udzungwa is for travelers who want more than game drives. The hiking, the endemic primates, and the waterfalls make it unique. Combine it with Ruaha and Mikumi for the ultimate southern Tanzania adventure.
