Zanzibar Spice Tour β The Scent of the Spice Island
Walk through plantations where cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon grow. This is why Zanzibar is called the Spice Island.
Why Zanzibar Is the Spice Island
For centuries, Zanzibar was the world's leading producer of cloves β the dried flower buds of the evergreen clove tree. Arab traders established plantations in the 19th century, and by the early 1900s, Zanzibar produced 90% of the world's supply. While that dominance has faded, the island's spice legacy remains.
Today, spice tours are one of Zanzibar's most popular experiences. You walk through working plantations, tasting, smelling, and learning about the spices that flavor the world's food and perfumes.

What You Will See
- Cloves β The signature spice. You will see the trees, the harvesting process, and the drying buds.
- Vanilla β Delicate orchid vines. The beans are hand-pollinated and aged for months.
- Nutmeg & mace β The nutmeg fruit yields two spices: the seed (nutmeg) and the red aril (mace).
- Cinnamon β The inner bark of the cinnamon tree, peeled and dried into curls.
- Black pepper β Climbing vines with clusters of peppercorns in various stages of ripeness.
- Turmeric & ginger β Underground rhizomes that you can smell fresh from the soil.
- Iodine plant β A natural antiseptic used traditionally before modern medicine.
- Lipstick fruit β A red berry that dyes your lips bright red when crushed.
How a Spice Tour Works
Most tours last 2-3 hours and are guided walks through a working plantation near Stone Town. Your guide will pick leaves, fruits, and bark for you to smell, taste, and touch. You will learn medicinal uses, cooking applications, and historical significance.
The tour ends at a spice shop where you can buy freshly harvested spices at reasonable prices. Quality varies β buy from reputable farms rather than roadside vendors.
Best Spice Farms to Visit
- Kidichi Spice Farm β One of the oldest and most established. Professional guides, good quality spices.
- Kizimbani Spice Farm β Smaller, more intimate. Less commercial than Kidichi.
- Dole Spice Plantation β Near Stone Town, easy to combine with a city tour.
Tips
- Wear comfortable shoes β the ground can be uneven and muddy
- Bring insect repellent β plantations attract mosquitoes
- Bring small bills for tips and purchases
- Taste everything β the fresh spices taste completely different from supermarket versions
- Buy spices at the end β they are fresher and cheaper than souvenir shops
