Stone Town alley in Zanzibar

Destination guide

Stone Town β€” Zanzibar's Beating Heart

A labyrinth of spice-scented alleys, slave trade history, and Swahili culture that has been UNESCO-protected since 2000.

What Is Stone Town?

Stone Town is the old quarter of Zanzibar City, the capital of Zanzibar. It is a dense maze of narrow alleys, coral-stone buildings, carved wooden doors, and rooftop terraces that look out over the Indian Ocean. It has been a trading hub for over 1,000 years β€” a place where African, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European cultures collided and blended into something uniquely Swahili.

In 2000, Stone Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is Zanzibar's cultural and historical center β€” a place to wander, get lost, and discover.

Must-See Sights

  • The Old Fort β€” Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, now houses cultural events and a craft market.
  • House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) β€” Once the tallest building in East Africa. Now a museum of Swahili culture.
  • The Slave Market & Anglican Cathedral β€” Built on the site of Zanzibar's last slave market. The underground chambers are deeply moving.
  • Forodhani Gardens β€” The waterfront promenade. At night, street vendors sell Zanzibar pizza and sugarcane juice.
  • Darajani Market β€” The main bazaar. Spices, fish, fruit, and chaos. The sensory overload is half the fun.
  • The Doors β€” Stone Town's carved wooden doors are an art form. Brass studs indicate Indian influence; Arabic script shows Persian heritage.

Walking Tour: How to Explore

The best way to see Stone Town is on foot β€” but you will get lost. The alleys have no logic, no names, and no maps that help. Embrace it. Getting lost is the experience.

A guided walking tour (2-3 hours) is highly recommended for first-timers. Guides know the history, the hidden courtyards, and the best spice stalls. They also help you navigate without frustration.

Practical tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes β€” the alleys are uneven
  • Dress modestly β€” cover shoulders and knees
  • Carry small bills for tips and purchases
  • Stay hydrated β€” the humidity is intense
  • Visit in the morning β€” it is cooler and less crowded

Food & Drink

  • Zanzibar pizza β€” A street food legend. Find it at Forodhani Gardens.
  • Seafood β€” Fresh catch of the day at rooftop restaurants overlooking the harbor.
  • Spice tea β€” Cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon in every cup.
  • Sugar cane juice β€” Fresh-pressed with lime and ginger.

Where to Stay

  • Park Hyatt Zanzibar β€” Luxury on the waterfront. Beautiful restoration of a historic building.
  • Zanzibar Serena β€” Historic hotel with a rooftop restaurant and pool.
  • Emerson on Hurumzi β€” Boutique, characterful, with the best rooftop dinner in Stone Town.
  • Jafferji House β€” Small, intimate, beautifully restored merchant's house.

The Bottom Line

Stone Town is not a place to rush. It is a place to wander, get lost, and discover. Every alley holds a story. Every door has history. And the smell of cloves and cardamom will stay with you long after you leave.
