Tanzania Camping Safari β Budget, Mobile & Luxury Under Canvas
From basic public campsites to ultra-luxury mobile tented camps, here is every way to sleep in the bush.
Why Camp on Safari?
Camping puts you closer to the wild than any lodge. You hear hyenas whooping at night, wake to birdsong at dawn, and watch the sun set from your tent door. It is immersive, authentic, and often surprisingly comfortable.
Tanzania offers camping options for every budget and comfort level β from $50/night budget campsites to $2,000/night luxury mobile camps.

Budget Camping Safari
Budget camping uses public campsites inside national parks. You sleep in dome tents with sleeping bags and mattresses. A cook prepares meals over a campfire. Shared ablutions (toilets and showers) are basic but functional.
What to expect:
- 2-person dome tents with sleeping mats
- Campfire-cooked meals (often surprisingly good)
- Shared bathroom blocks (cold water showers, squat toilets in some)
- No electricity β headlamps essential
- Animals may pass through camp at night (fenced areas keep them at distance)
Cost: $150-$250 per person per day (all-inclusive with vehicle, guide, park fees, and meals).
Best for: Backpackers, students, and travelers prioritizing wildlife over comfort.
Mobile Tented Camps
Mobile camps move with the migration or seasonally to track wildlife. They offer proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, and full service β a middle ground between budget camping and luxury lodges.
What to expect:
- Walk-in canvas tents with real beds and linens
- En-suite bathrooms with bucket showers and flush toilets
- Full dining tent with table service and wine
- Solar lighting and charging stations
- Small groups (8-16 guests max)
Cost: $400-$800 per person per night.
Best for: Travelers who want the camping experience without roughing it.

Luxury Glamping
Luxury tented camps are permanent structures with canvas walls β essentially five-star hotels under canvas. Think hardwood floors, freestanding tubs, private pools, and butler service.
What to expect:
- Enormous tents (600+ sq ft) with king beds and designer furnishings
- Full en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and bathtubs
- Private decks with plunge pools
- Gourmet dining, wine cellars, and private chefs
- Spa treatments, gym facilities, and butler service
Cost: $1,000-$2,500 per person per night.
Best for: Honeymooners, special occasions, and travelers who want wild setting with maximum comfort.
Camping Tips
- Bring a good headlamp β Essential for navigating camp after dark
- Earplugs β Hyenas, lions, and insects can be loud at night
- Warm layers β Nights are cold, even near the equator
- Power bank β Charging options are limited in budget camps
- Flip-flops for showers β Shared facilities are cleaner with them
- Embrace the experience β The sounds of the bush at night are the whole point
