
Kilimanjaro Packing List
Everything you need for a safe, comfortable, and successful summit.
Layering System
Kilimanjaro's temperatures swing from 25°C at the base to -25°C at the summit. A proper layering system is essential.
Base Layer
- 2-3 thermal underwear sets (top & bottom)
- 5-6 moisture-wicking underwear
- 3-4 moisture-wicking t-shirts
- Avoid cotton completely!
Mid Layer
- 2-3 long-sleeve shirts
- 2 fleece jackets or pullovers
- 1 insulated synthetic/down jacket
- 1 trekking pants (convertible ideal)
Outer Layer
- Waterproof, breathable rain jacket (Gore-Tex)
- Waterproof rain pants
- Down jacket (-10°C rated minimum)
- Warm winter gloves + liner gloves
Essential Gear
Footwear
- Broken-in hiking boots (waterproof, ankle support)
- Camp shoes (sandals or sneakers)
- 4-5 pairs merino wool trekking socks
- 2-3 liner socks
Head & Hands
- Warm beanie / balaclava
- Sun hat with brim
- Buff or neck gaiter
- Sunglasses (category 3-4, UV400)
Sleeping
- Sleeping bag rated to -15°C or lower
- Sleeping bag liner (adds warmth)
- Inflatable pillow (optional)
- Earplugs
Daypack
- 30-35L daypack
- 3L hydration bladder or water bottles
- Headlamp + extra batteries
- Trekking poles (collapsible)
Toiletries & Health
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ & lip balm with SPF
- Toilet paper & wet wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- Personal medication & blister kit
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, small soap
- Quick-dry microfiber towel
Documents
- Passport (6+ months validity)
- Kilimanjaro entry permits
- Travel insurance documents
- Emergency contact information
- Vaccination certificates (Yellow Fever if applicable)
Packing Tips
Layer your clothing — temperatures range from +25°C to -25°C
Bring cotton — it retains moisture and cold
Break in boots thoroughly before the trek
Buy new boots right before climbing
Pack items in waterproof bags or dry sacks
Assume your duffel is fully waterproof
Bring high-SPF sunscreen — UV is intense at altitude
Forget lip protection — chapped lips are common
Rent gear locally if needed (sleeping bags, poles)
Overpack — porters carry max 15kg for you
