Lake Natron — Flamingos, Waterfalls & Sacred Volcano

Lake Natron is one of East Africa's most dramatic landscapes — a vast alkaline lake that turns millions of lesser flamingos pink against a backdrop of the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano.

Why visit

  • Breeding ground for 2.5 million lesser flamingos — the world's largest colony.
  • Dramatic red and orange lake colors caused by algae and minerals.
  • Remote, off-the-beaten-path adventure with few other tourists.

Best time

June to October for dry conditions and clearer views. November to May offers greener scenery but hotter temperatures. Flamingos are present year-round.

Getting there

3-4 hours drive from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu. Rough roads require 4x4. Often combined with Ngorongoro and Serengeti in extended northern circuit itineraries.

The Lake & Its Wonders

Lake Natron is a shallow soda lake at the base of the Rift Valley. Its extreme alkalinity (pH up to 10.5) creates a hostile environment for most life — yet it is the perfect breeding ground for cyanobacteria, which in turn feeds the lake's famous flamingo population. During the dry season, the lake's surface can appear blood-red or orange, creating surreal, otherworldly photographs.

Beyond the lake, the area offers hiking to waterfalls near Engare Sero, visits to Maasai villages, and stunning views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano sacred to the Maasai people. The nearby Engare Sero Gorge features a series of waterfalls and natural swimming pools.

Highlights

  • • Flamingo breeding colony viewing
  • • Engare Sero Gorge waterfalls hike
  • • Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano trek (night ascent)
