Lake Natron β Flamingos, Waterfalls & Sacred Volcano
One of East Africa's most dramatic landscapes: a blood-red alkaline lake, millions of flamingos, hidden waterfalls, and an active volcano sacred to the Maasai.
A Landscape from Another World
Lake Natron looks like it belongs on Mars. The water can turn blood-red or burnt orange, depending on the season and algae concentration. The shoreline is crusted with salt. Behind it rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano sacred to the Maasai, who call it the "Mountain of God."
Despite its harsh appearance, Lake Natron is a crucial ecosystem. It is the world's most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos β up to 2.5 million birds gather here to nest on the salt islands, safe from predators.

The Flamingos
Lake Natron's extreme alkalinity (pH up to 10.5) makes it hostile to most life β but perfect for cyanobacteria, which the flamingos eat. The birds build mud nests on the salt islands, safe from the few predators that can survive here.
From July to October, the lake shimmers pink with millions of birds. It is one of the most spectacular wildlife gatherings on Earth β and because Natron is remote, you will share the view with only a handful of other travelers.
Engare Sero Waterfalls
A short drive from the lake, the Engare Sero Gorge hides a series of waterfalls and natural swimming pools. The hike takes 1-2 hours, winding through narrow canyon walls draped with ferns. At the end, a cool plunge pool awaits β a refreshing contrast to the harsh lake environment.
Nearby, the Engare Sero footprints are a series of ancient hominid tracks preserved in volcanic ash, estimated to be 5,000-19,000 years old. It is one of Africa's most important archaeological sites.
Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano
Ol Doinyo Lengai is Tanzania's only active carbonatite volcano. It erupts periodically β most recently in 2007-2008 and 2010 β sending black lava flows down its slopes. For the Maasai, it is a sacred mountain, and they still make pilgrimages to its summit.
The trek to the summit is demanding: a steep 5-6 hour climb, usually done at night to reach the crater rim for sunrise. From the top, the views stretch from Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti. The volcano is active, so check conditions before attempting.

Practical Information
Best time: June to October for dry weather and clear views. Flamingos are present year-round but most numerous in the dry season.
Getting there: 3-4 hours from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu. Roads are rough β a 4x4 is essential. Often combined with Ngorongoro and Serengeti in extended itineraries.
Where to stay: Options are limited. Lake Natron Tented Camp and Engare Sero Camp are the main choices. Both are basic but comfortable.
What to bring: Strong sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water. The lake's reflective surface intensifies the sun.
