Katavi floodplain with buffalo

Katavi National Park β€” Tanzania's Wildest Frontier

Buffalo herds of 4,000, hippo pools with 200 individuals, and landscapes untouched by tourism. This is Africa at its most raw.

Why Katavi?

Katavi is Tanzania's third-largest national park (4,471 kmΒ²) and its least visited. In a country where even the Serengeti has peak-season vehicle congestion, Katavi offers something almost extinct: a national park with virtually no other tourists.

The dry season concentrates wildlife to an extraordinary degree. The Katuma River and seasonal lakes shrink to narrow channels, and thousands of animals converge. Buffalo herds of 4,000. Hippo pools so dense you cannot see the water. Crocodiles that dig into mud caves to survive the drought.

Wildlife: The Superlatives

  • Buffalo β€” Herds of 1,000-4,000 in the dry season. The largest buffalo concentrations in Tanzania.
  • Hippos β€” 200+ individuals in a single pool. During drought, they are packed shoulder-to-shoulder.
  • Crocodiles β€” Katavi's crocodiles dig caves in riverbanks to survive the dry season β€” a unique behavior seen almost nowhere else.
  • Elephants β€” Large herds moving between woodland and the remaining water sources.
  • Lions β€” High density, preying on buffalo calves and weakened adults.
  • Wild dogs β€” A few packs roam the miombo woodland.

Best Time to Visit

June-October (dry season) is the only realistic time to visit. The floodplains are accessible, wildlife concentrates, and the drama is at its peak. Roads become impassable in the wet season, and most camps close November-May.

Getting There

Katavi is remote. The only practical access is by charter flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam (2-3 hours) to Sumbu airstrip. There are no reliable road routes β€” it is a full day of rough 4x4 driving from Mbeya, and rental vehicles are not available.

Where to Stay

  • Chada Katavi β€” The classic Katavi camp. Just 6 tents, exceptional guiding, and the original Katavi experience. Seasonal (June-Oct).
  • Greystoke Mahale β€” While technically at Mahale, it is often combined with Katavi in the same itinerary.

Accommodation in Katavi is extremely limited. Book months in advance.

Who Should Visit Katavi?

Katavi is not for first-timers or those seeking luxury amenities. It is for travelers who have been to the Serengeti, who understand what a safari vehicle is, and who want to experience Africa as it was before tourism existed.

If you value wilderness over WiFi, solitude over swimming pools, and authenticity over air conditioning, Katavi is your destination.
