Buffalo in Tanzania — The Black Death

Cape buffalo have killed more big-game hunters than any other African animal. They are unpredictable, vengeful, and surprisingly fast. A wounded buffalo will circle back and ambush its pursuer. They have been known to wait in bush for hours, listening for the hunter's approach.

To safari-goers, buffalo are thrilling rather than threatening. But the danger is real — respect them. Never approach on foot. Never underestimate them.

Buffalo herds are matriarchal, led by older females. The herd moves as a unit, protecting calves in the center. When threatened, they form a defensive wall — horns out, ready to charge.

Old male buffalo, pushed out of the herd, become solitary "dagga boys" (mud boys). They wallow alone in mud holes, growing massive curved horns and a reputation for aggression. They are the buffalo most likely to charge.

Lions and buffalo are locked in a perpetual arms race. Buffalo herds defend calves ferociously — charging lions, goring them with horns, and driving them off. But a pride of 15+ lions can bring down an adult buffalo, especially if it is isolated or weak.

Some of the most dramatic footage in wildlife filmmaking comes from buffalo-lion encounters. Buffalo herds have been filmed rescuing captured calves by charging lions as a group — a rare display of collective heroism in the animal kingdom.
