Mikumi National Park β Tanzania's Most Accessible Safari
Just 4 hours from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi offers genuine wildlife without the long journey to the north.
Why Visit Mikumi?
Mikumi is Tanzania's most accessible national park for travelers based in Dar es Salaam. Just 4 hours by road on a good tarmac highway, it offers a genuine safari experience without the cost and time of flying to the Serengeti.
The park covers 3,230 kmΒ² and shares an ecosystem with the much larger Selous (Nyerere) to the south. It is ideal for a 2-3 day short safari, a weekend escape from Dar, or a first safari for those with limited time.

Wildlife to Expect
- Lions β Common, especially near the Mkata River floodplain
- Elephants β Good sightings, often in family groups
- Giraffes β Maasai giraffes are frequently seen browsing acacias
- Zebras and wildebeest β Large herds on the floodplain
- Buffalo β Herds of 100+ in the dry season
- Leopards β Present but shy; best seen on night drives in adjacent reserves
- Wild dogs β Occasional visitors from Selous
- 300+ bird species β Excellent for birdwatchers
Best Time to Visit
June-October (dry season) is best. Wildlife concentrates on the Mkata floodplain, roads are passable, and vegetation is low. November-May is greener but wetter β some lodges offer discounts.
How to Get There
By road: 4 hours from Dar es Salaam on excellent tarmac. Self-drive is possible but a guided safari vehicle is recommended.
By air: Charter flights to the park's airstrip. Faster but more expensive.
Where to Stay
- Vuma Hills Tented Camp β Perched on a hill with panoramic views. Comfortable and well-located.
- Mikumi Wildlife Camp β Mid-range, reliable, near the park gate.
- Tan-Swiss Lodge β Budget-friendly, popular with Dar residents for weekend trips.
The Bottom Line
Mikumi is not the Serengeti. But it is real safari, real wildlife, and real value β with a fraction of the travel time and cost. For a first safari, a weekend escape, or a budget-conscious trip, it delivers.
