Tanzania Beach Extension β From Safari to Sand
Where to go after the bush: Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, and the coast. How long to stay and what to expect.
Why Add a Beach Extension?
A safari is exhilarating β early mornings, dusty roads, constant sensory stimulation. After 5-8 days, you will be tired. A beach extension is the perfect recovery: white sand, turquoise water, fresh seafood, and nothing on your schedule.
Tanzania's coastline and islands are among the most beautiful in the Indian Ocean. And the transition from bush to beach is seamless β direct flights from the Serengeti to Zanzibar take 45 minutes.

Where to Go
- Zanzibar (Unguja) β The classic choice. White-sand beaches, Stone Town, spice tours, and a wide range of accommodation. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have the best swimming beaches.
- Pemba β Zanzibar's wilder sister. Deeper diving, fewer tourists, and a more authentic Swahili experience. For travelers who have "done" Zanzibar.
- Mafia Island β A marine park with whale sharks, turtles, and pristine reefs. No Stone Town β just nature. Divers and snorkelers should choose Mafia.
- Mainland coast (Bagamoyo, Saadani) β Closest to Dar es Salaam. Saadani is the only national park in East Africa with a beach on the Indian Ocean.
How Long to Stay
- 3-4 days β Minimum. One day to recover, two to explore
- 5-7 days β Ideal. Time to relax, take a spice tour, and maybe snorkel or dive
- 10+ days β Combine Zanzibar and Pemba, or add a diving course
Logistics
- Flights: Direct from Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar (45 min). Or fly Arusha-Zanzibar (1.5 hours)
- Ferry: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar (2 hours). Cheaper but less comfortable
- Transfers: Most beach resorts arrange airport pickups
- Visa: Zanzibar is part of Tanzania β same visa covers both
The Bottom Line
A safari without a beach extension is like a symphony without a finale. The contrast β from the raw energy of the bush to the peace of the ocean β is what makes a Tanzania trip complete.
