Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)
Tanzania's currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While USD is widely accepted for tourism, using local currency for smaller purchases often gets better rates. Exchange rates fluctuate, so check current rates before travel.
Exchange: Exchange USD to TZS at banks, authorized forex bureaus, or hotels. Airport exchange desks offer convenience but may have less favorable rates.
USD notes: Bring USD notes in good condition (no tears, marks, or damage). Notes older than 2006 may not be accepted. Small bills ($1, $5, $10) are useful for tips.
ATM Access
Availability: ATMs are available in major cities (Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza) and some towns. Safari lodges and remote areas typically have no ATM access.
Withdrawal limits: ATMs typically have withdrawal limits of 400,000-800,000 TZS per transaction. Multiple transactions may be needed for larger amounts.
Card acceptance: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at ATMs. American Express has limited acceptance. Notify your bank of travel plans to avoid blocks.
Credit Card Acceptance
Lodges and hotels: Most mid-range and luxury lodges accept Visa and Mastercard. Some accept American Express. Budget camps may be cash-only.
Shops and restaurants: Credit card acceptance varies in cities and towns. Cash is more reliable for smaller establishments and markets.
Fees: Some merchants add credit card surcharges (typically 3-5%). Cash payments may offer discounts or avoid these fees.
Budgeting Tips
Tips: Budget approximately $10-20 per day for tips (guides, drivers, camp staff). Carry small USD bills for tipping convenience.
Souvenirs: Budget for souvenirs if you plan to shop. Cash is preferred for markets and local artisans.
Emergency cash: Always carry some emergency cash in both USD and TZS. Credit card systems occasionally fail, and cash ensures you're never stranded.
