Tanzania Safari with Babies & Toddlers β Is It Possible?
The honest truth about taking infants on safari: what works, what does not, and how to decide.
The Short Answer
A safari with a baby is possible but not recommended for children under 2 years old. The combination of malaria risk, rough roads, heat, dust, and limited medical facilities in remote areas makes it challenging and, in some cases, risky.
Most lodges and operators have a minimum age of 5-6 years for regular safaris. Some family-focused lodges accept younger children, but options are limited.

The Challenges
- Malaria β Babies cannot take malaria prophylaxis. The risk in most safari areas is real.
- Rough roads β Bumpy tracks for hours at a time are uncomfortable for adults. For babies, they can be distressing and potentially unsafe without proper car seats.
- Heat and dust β Babies regulate temperature poorly. Safari vehicles are dusty and often hot.
- Medical access β The nearest hospital to the Serengeti is hours away. Evacuation insurance is essential but does not prevent emergencies.
- Sleep schedules β Safari days start at 5:30 AM. This is hard on babies and parents.
If You Must Go
If you are determined to safari with a baby, here is how to minimize risk:
- Choose malaria-free areas β The Ngorongoro Crater rim (above 1,800m) is essentially malaria-free
- Stay in one lodge β Minimize road transfers and long drives
- Private vehicle β You control the schedule. Leave when the baby needs to
- Bring a car seat β Most operators do not provide them
- Medical kit β Pediatric medications, thermometer, oral rehydration salts
- Evacuation insurance β Non-negotiable
The Better Alternative
If your child is under 3, consider a Zanzibar beach holiday instead. The malaria risk is lower, medical facilities are better, and the pace is suited to young families. Return for the safari when they are older β 5+ is the ideal age.
