Pre-Trek Briefing · Moshi/Arusha

Briefing and equipment check. This route is not recommended for those with little altitude or mountain experience.

Umbwe Cave Camp

Drive one hour to Umbwe Gate. The trail enters the rainforest immediately and climbs steeply through dense vegetation, with a packed lunch enjoyed en route.

Elevation: 1,660m – 2,850m | Distance: 11 km | Time: 5–6 hrs

Barranco Camp

Leave the forest and ascend across open moorland on a direct south-ridge line to Barranco Camp, joining the Machame route at the foot of the Great Barranco Wall.

Elevation: 2,850m – 3,950m | Distance: 6 km | Time: 4–5 hrs

Karanga Camp

Scale the exhilarating Barranco Wall scramble then cross the Karanga Valley to camp.

Elevation: 3,950m – 4,050m | Distance: 5 km | Time: 3–4 hrs

Barafu Camp

Climb to Barafu high camp on a rocky ridge with sweeping views of the summit cone.

Elevation: 4,050m – 4,700m | Distance: 4 km | Time: 3–4 hrs

Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Midnight summit push through scree towards Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak. Full descent to Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4,700m – 5,895m – 3,090m | Distance: 18 km | Time: 12–15 hrs

Mweka Gate

Forest descent to Mweka Gate for summit certificates and vehicle transfer to Moshi.

Elevation: 3,090m – 1,680m | Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hrs
