Why visit
- Base town for all Kilimanjaro routes — Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, Umbwe.
- Chagga culture, coffee plantations, and banana beer tastings.
- Marangu Waterfalls, Kinukamori Falls, and beautiful forest hikes.
Best time
January to March and June to October are best for clear Kili views and climbing. April-May (long rains) and November (short rains) see fewer visitors but wetter conditions.
Getting there
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is 45 minutes away. Moshi is 1.5 hours from Arusha by road. Well-connected to Dar es Salaam by flight or the new SGR railway.
More Than a Base Camp
Moshi pulses with the energy of climbers preparing for summits and returning in celebration. But beyond Kilimanjaro, the town and its surrounding villages offer rich cultural and natural experiences. The Chagga people, who have farmed these fertile slopes for centuries, welcome visitors to learn about their traditions, taste local banana beer, and explore underground caves used during tribal wars.
Coffee lovers can tour organic plantations, picking and roasting beans while learning about Tanzania's coffee trade. Nearby waterfalls like Marangu and Kinukamori provide refreshing half-day hikes through lush rainforest — perfect for acclimatization before a climb or relaxation after.
