Birdwatching in Tanzania β€” A Birder's Paradise

1,100+ species, 34 endemics, and some of the most spectacular bird spectacles on Earth.

Why Tanzania for Birding?

Tanzania has over 1,100 recorded bird species β€” roughly 10% of all bird species on Earth. Its diversity is staggering: from the endemic Usambara eagle-owl to massive flocks of flamingos on Lake Natron, from the bizarre secretary bird stalking the Serengeti plains to the brilliant lilac-breasted roller perched on every acacia.

Whether you are a serious lister or a casual enthusiast, Tanzania delivers. Many birds are large, colorful, and habituated β€” meaning you get excellent views without needing extreme optics.

Flamingos on Lake Natron

Best Parks for Birding

  • Arusha National Park β€” 400+ species in a small area. Momella Lakes for waterbirds, montane forest for endemics.
  • Lake Manyara β€” Famous for flamingos, pelicans, storks, and raptors. Over 400 species.
  • Tarangire β€” Dry-country specialists, raptors, and the endemic ashy starling.
  • Nyerere (Selous) β€” Waterbirds, bee-eaters, and miombo woodland specials.
  • Serengeti β€” Raptors, ostriches, and grassland species. Excellent for photography.
  • Udzungwa Mountains β€” Endemic forest species found nowhere else on Earth.

Iconic Species to Look For

  • Secretary bird β€” A snake-hunting raptor that walks on stilt-like legs
  • Lilac-breasted roller β€” Tanzania's unofficial national bird. Seven colors in one bird.
  • Saddle-billed stork β€” Huge, prehistoric, and unmistakable
  • Kori bustard β€” The world's heaviest flying bird
  • Marabou stork β€” The "undertaker bird." Ugly and fascinating.
  • Hamerkop β€” Builds massive nests that weigh 50+ kg
  • African fish eagle β€” The sound of Africa. Hear it before you see it.
  • Greater flamingo β€” 1.5 million on Lake Natron at peak. A pink sea.

Best Time for Birding

November to April is the birding season. European and Asian migrants arrive, joining resident species. The parks are lush, insects are abundant, and birds are breeding in spectacular plumage.

June to October is still excellent for resident species, especially raptors and large waterbirds. Dry season means better visibility.

Birding Safari Tips

  • Bring a spotting scope β€” Essential for waterbirds and distant raptors
  • A 400mm lens minimum for bird photography
  • Request a birding guide β€” Not all safari guides are birders. Ask for a specialist
  • Early mornings β€” Birds are most active and vocal at dawn
  • Visit Momella Lakes β€” A half-day add-on from Arusha with 100+ species
