Birdwatching Tanzania Safari Guide

Tanzania is one of Africa's premier birding destinations with over 1,100 bird species, including many endemics and near-endemics. From the endemic species of the Eastern Arc mountains to the migratory birds that visit seasonal wetlands, Tanzania offers incredible birding year-round.

Tanzania hosts several endemic bird species found nowhere else. The Udzungwa forest partridge, Rufous-winged sunbird, and Kilimanjaro white-eye are among the most sought-after endemics. The Eastern Arc mountains are biodiversity hotspots with many unique species.

Serengeti: Over 500 species including raptors, bustards, and migratory birds. Open savannas provide excellent viewing conditions.

Lake Manyara: Famous for its flamingos and waterbirds. The groundwater forest hosts forest species not found in savannas.

Selous (Nyerere): Boat safaris on the Rufiji River offer incredible waterbird viewing. The reserve's diverse habitats support over 400 species.

November-March: Migratory birds from Europe and Asia arrive. This is the best time for bird diversity with both resident and migratory species present.

June-October: Dry season concentrates birds around water sources, making them easier to locate. Resident species are active and breeding.

April-May: Long rains bring lush conditions and many species are breeding. Some areas may be difficult to access but birding is excellent.

Equipment: Bring binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 recommended), a field guide to East African birds, and a camera with telephoto lens for documentation.
