Gombe Stream β€” Where Jane Goodall Changed Everything

The world's most famous chimpanzee research site, on the remote shores of Lake Tanganyika.

A Place in Scientific History

In 1960, a 26-year-old Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe Stream with binoculars, a notebook, and extraordinary patience. She was sent by Louis Leakey to study chimpanzees. What she discovered changed primatology forever: chimps made tools, had distinct personalities, waged wars, and grieved their dead.

Today, Gombe is the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world. Researchers have been here for over 60 years, documenting generations of the Kasekela community. And visitors can walk the same trails Jane walked, encountering the descendants of the very chimps she named.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Gombe's chimps are highly habituated after six decades of research. Treks typically last 2-4 hours through steep, forested terrain. Guides know the chimps' territories and daily movements.

The Kasekela community is the main group observed by visitors. You may see feeding, grooming, mothers with infants, or the famous pant-hoot calls that echo through the valley. Sometimes the chimps come right to the beach near camp.

Other Wildlife

  • Baboons β€” Olive baboons are everywhere, habituated and entertaining
  • Red colobus monkeys β€” One of Tanzania's most beautiful primates
  • Red-tailed and blue monkeys β€” Common in the canopy
  • Bushbucks β€” Often seen near camp
  • Over 200 bird species β€” Forest and lake specialists
  • Lake Tanganyika cichlids β€” Colorful fish, visible while snorkeling

Best Time to Visit

May-October (dry season) is best. Trails are firm, chimps range lower, and lake conditions are calm. November-April brings rain, lush vegetation, and harder trekking, but fewer visitors.

Getting There

Gombe is accessed by boat from Kigoma (2-3 hours) or by charter flight to the park's airstrip. Kigoma itself is a long drive from anywhere β€” most visitors fly in from Dar es Salaam or Arusha.

Where to Stay

  • Gombe Forest Lodge β€” The only proper lodge inside the park. Comfortable bandas on the lakeshore.
  • Kigoma Hilltop Hotel β€” Stay in Kigoma and take day trips to Gombe by boat.
  • Budget camping β€” Basic campsites near the park headquarters.

Gombe vs Mahale: Which for Chimps?

  • Gombe β€” Smaller, steeper, more intimate, cheaper, deeply historical
  • Mahale β€” Larger, beachfront camps, swimming in the lake, more chimps, more luxurious

If you are a science and history enthusiast, choose Gombe. If you want the ultimate remote-luxury experience, choose Mahale. Both are extraordinary.
