Mahale Mountains β€” Chimpanzees on the Shores of Lake Tanganyika

Trek through montane forest to encounter wild chimpanzees, then swim in the world's longest freshwater lake. There is nothing else like it.

Why Mahale Is Extraordinary

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most extraordinary places in Africa. It sits on the shores of Lake Tanganyika β€” the world's longest freshwater lake β€” backed by the steep, forested Mahale Mountains. And it is home to roughly 1,000 wild chimpanzees, including the famous M-group, habituated to human observers since the 1960s.

The combination is unique: primate trekking in the morning, swimming and dhow cruises in the afternoon, and sleeping in a camp so remote it can only be reached by boat. No roads enter the park. There are no vehicles at all.

Chimpanzee Trekking: What to Expect

The chimpanzees of Mahale are wild, not captive or semi-habituated. They live in the forest and come down to the lakeshore seasonally. Your guide tracks them by listening for calls, checking overnight nests, and following fresh signs.

Treks can last from 1 hour to 5 hours, depending on where the chimps are. The terrain is steep, humid, and sometimes muddy. When you find them, you spend one hour observing from a respectful distance. You may see grooming, feeding, play, or aggressive displays.

The M-group is the most habituated, numbering around 60 individuals. They are accustomed to human observers and generally tolerate presence. But they are wild β€” their behavior is unpredictable.

Best Time to Visit

May-October is the dry season and the best time for chimp trekking. The chimps stay lower in the forest, closer to the lake, and trails are more accessible. November-April is the wet season β€” lush and beautiful, but trekking is harder and some camps close.

Getting There

Mahale is one of Tanzania's most remote parks. Access is by charter flight to the airstrip (1.5-2 hours from Arusha or Dar), then a boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika (1-2 hours) to your camp. There are no roads into the park.

Where to Stay

  • Greystoke Mahale β€” The legendary camp. Open-fronted bandas on the beach, wooden dhow for sunset cruises, exceptional guiding. The gold standard.
  • Nomad Kigelia β€” Simpler, more rustic, but perfectly located for chimp trekking.
  • Kungwe Beach Lodge β€” Mid-range option with beachfront bandas.

Beyond Chimpanzees

Mahale is not just about chimps. The lake offers fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling (yes, the water is that clear). The forest holds other primates β€” red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and blue monkeys. Birdlife is exceptional. And the sunsets over Lake Tanganyika are among the best in Africa.
