Spotted Hyenas in Tanzania

Tanzania's spotted hyenas are the most common hyena species, found throughout the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and other parks. They live in large clans led by dominant females, with complex social hierarchies and sophisticated communication systems.

Contrary to popular belief, hyenas hunt more than they scavenge. They're successful predators capable of taking down large prey, working together in coordinated groups.

Hyena Social Structure

Hyena clans are matriarchal societies where females dominate males. Cubs are raised in communal dens, with all clan members contributing to their care. This social structure is unique among African predators and fascinating to observe.

Female hyenas are larger and more aggressive than males. They maintain strict hierarchies that determine access to food and resources. Understanding this social structure adds depth to hyena viewing.

Hunting vs Scavenging

While hyenas are excellent scavengers, they're also skilled hunters. Research shows they hunt up to 70% of their food, taking down prey much larger than themselves. Their powerful jaws can crush bone, allowing them to access food other predators can't.

During calving season, hyenas are particularly active hunters, taking advantage of vulnerable wildebeest calves. This period offers dramatic predator-prey viewing opportunities.

Best Viewing Locations

Ngorongoro Crater has one of Africa's highest hyena densities, with large clans frequently seen on game drives. The Serengeti offers excellent viewing, particularly during migration season when hyenas follow the herds.

Night drives in some areas provide opportunities to see hyenas hunting, as they're primarily nocturnal hunters. Your guide will know the best locations and times for hyena viewing.
