Required Vaccinations
Yellow Fever: Required if arriving from or transiting through Yellow Fever endemic countries. Certificate must be presented on entry. Consult current requirements as they can change.
COVID-19: Requirements vary. Check current entry requirements before travel. Some countries require proof of vaccination or negative test.
Recommended Vaccinations
Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers due to potential exposure through contaminated food or water.
Typhoid: Recommended, especially for travelers visiting smaller cities or rural areas where food and water precautions may be challenging.
Hepatitis B: Recommended for travelers who might have exposure to blood or body fluids, medical procedures, or sexual contact with locals.
Rabies: Consider for travelers who will have extensive outdoor exposure in rural areas or who will be handling animals.
Malaria Prophylaxis
Malaria is present in many parts of Tanzania, including safari areas. Prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Common options include:
Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil): Daily pill, taken 1-2 days before travel, during stay, and 7 days after. Few side effects.
Doxycycline: Daily antibiotic, taken 1-2 days before, during, and 4 weeks after. Can cause sun sensitivity.
Mefloquine (Lariam): Weekly pill, taken several weeks before, during, and 4 weeks after. Can cause vivid dreams and other side effects.

Essential Medications to Pack
Pain relievers: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for headaches, muscle aches, and fever.
Anti-diarrheal: Loperamide for traveler's diarrhea. Also pack oral rehydration salts.
Antihistamines: For allergic reactions and insect bites.
Motion sickness: If you're prone to motion sickness, especially on light aircraft transfers.
Altitude medication: If climbing Kilimanjaro, consult your doctor about acetazolamide (Diamox) for altitude sickness prevention.
