Tanzania Safari Phones & WiFi β€” Staying Connected

How to get signal in the Serengeti, when to expect WiFi, and why disconnecting might be the best part of your trip.

Phone Service in Tanzania

Tanzania has decent mobile coverage in urban areas and along major roads. The Serengeti and remote parks are a different story β€” patchy at best, nonexistent at worst.

  • Vodacom β€” Best coverage overall. Works in most safari areas including parts of the Serengeti.
  • Airtel β€” Good alternative. Similar coverage to Vodacom.
  • Tigo β€” Cheapest but more limited coverage. Fine for cities.

A local SIM card costs about $1-2. Bring your passport to register. Data bundles are cheap β€” $5-10 buys several GB.

WiFi on Safari

WiFi availability varies dramatically by lodge type:

  • Luxury lodges: Usually have WiFi in main areas. Often slow and unreliable. Some have in-room WiFi.
  • Mid-range lodges: WiFi in main areas only. Often limited to certain hours.
  • Tented camps: Some have WiFi; many do not. The remote ones almost never do.
  • Mobile camps: Essentially no connectivity. Embrace it.

Do not count on WiFi for video calls, large uploads, or streaming. It is enough for messaging, light browsing, and posting photos.

Charging Your Devices

  • Lodges: Standard 240V UK-style plugs (Type G). Some also have European-style (Type C).
  • Camps: Charging stations in main areas, often solar-powered. Limited capacity.
  • Vehicles: Some safari vehicles have USB charging ports. Confirm before departure.
  • Power banks: Essential. Bring at least one high-capacity bank per person.
  • Adapters: Bring universal adapters. Tanzania uses UK-style plugs.

When to Disconnect

Consider this: you have traveled thousands of miles to one of the last places on Earth without email notifications. The animals do not have WiFi. The stars do not need Instagram.

Many seasoned safari-goers deliberately choose camps without connectivity. It forces presence. It makes the experience richer. And when you return, the photos and stories are better than any real-time post.
