Camera Equipment

Camera body: A DSLR or mirrorless camera with good low-light performance is ideal. Bring a backup camera if possible. Weather-sealed cameras handle dust and moisture better.

Lenses: Bring a telephoto lens (200-400mm) for wildlife and a wide-angle lens for landscapes. A versatile zoom lens (70-200mm) is excellent for safari conditions.

Memory cards: Bring more memory than you think you need. You'll take hundreds of photos daily. 64GB+ cards recommended. Bring multiple cards to avoid losing all photos if one fails.

Batteries: Bring at least 2-3 spare batteries. Cold temperatures drain batteries faster. Keep batteries warm in pockets when not in use.

Binoculars

Importance: Binoculars are essential for safari. You'll miss much without them. Invest in a good pair — they're worth every shilling.

Specifications: 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars are ideal for safari. 8x offers wider field of view, 10x offers more magnification. Avoid higher magnification which is harder to stabilize.

Features: Look for waterproof, fog-proof binoculars with good lens coatings. Roof prism binoculars are more compact and durable.

Alternative: If budget is limited, a good pair of binoculars is more important than an expensive camera lens. Prioritize binoculars over camera gear if choosing.

Clothing

Colors: Pack neutral colors — khaki, olive, tan, and brown. Avoid black (attracts tsetse flies) and white (shows dust). Bright colors can disturb wildlife.

Layers: Bring layers for varying temperatures. Mornings and evenings are cold, midday is hot. A fleece jacket, light sweater, and base layers are essential.

Footwear: Comfortable closed-toe shoes or hiking boots. Break them in before your trip. Avoid sandals for game drives due to dust and potential insect encounters.

Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is essential for sun protection. A hat with a chin strap is ideal for open vehicle game drives.

Essential Accessories

Sun protection: High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and lip balm with SPF. The African sun is intense, even on cloudy days.

Insect protection: Insect repellent with DEET, long sleeves and pants for evening wear, and anti-malarial medication as prescribed by your doctor.

Power: Power bank for charging devices, universal travel adapter, and extra charging cables. Many lodges have limited or no power outlets.

Headlamp: A headlamp is essential for moving around camp at night. Choose one with red light mode to preserve night vision.

Luggage Considerations

Soft-sided bags: Soft duffel bags are preferred over hard suitcases. They fit better in vehicles and are easier to pack. Hard suitcases are not allowed on light aircraft flights.

Weight limits: Light aircraft flights have strict 15kg (33 lbs) weight limits in soft bags. Pack light and use laundry service available at most lodges.

Packing cubes: Packing cubes help organize your luggage and make finding items easier. They compress clothing to save space.

Day pack: A small day pack for game drives is essential. Keep camera, binoculars, water, sunscreen, and other essentials accessible.

Optional but Useful

Field guide: A wildlife field guide helps identify animals and birds. East Africa-specific guides are most useful.

Journal: A small notebook for recording sightings, experiences, and memories. Great for documenting your safari adventure.

Binocular harness: A binocular harness keeps binoculars accessible and comfortable during long game drives. Better than neck straps.

Dry bags: Dry bags protect electronics and important documents from dust and moisture. Safari vehicles can be dusty and occasionally wet.
