Permanent Tented Camps

Features: Luxury tents with permanent structures, en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and private decks. Canvas walls provide immersive wildlife sounds while maintaining comfort.

Locations: Situated in prime wildlife viewing areas. Many have waterholes or salt licks attracting wildlife to the camp. Excellent for wildlife viewing from camp.

Amenities: En-suite bathrooms with hot showers, comfortable beds, private verandas, and sometimes plunge pools. Communal dining areas create social atmosphere.

Service: Excellent service with attentive staff. Many camps have butler service and personalized attention. Dining is often communal with other guests.

Mobile Tented Camps

Seasonal movement: Mobile camps move seasonally to follow wildlife migration. This ensures optimal wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Basic comfort: Simpler than permanent camps but still comfortable. En-suite or shared bathrooms, comfortable beds, and good food. More rustic experience.

Exclusive locations: Mobile camps often operate in private areas with fewer other tourists. More exclusive wildlife viewing away from crowds.

Authentic experience: Closer to traditional safari experience. The sounds of the African night are more pronounced, creating a more immersive wilderness experience.

Fly Camping

Lightweight camps: Minimalist camps set up in remote areas for one or two nights. Basic but comfortable. Often combined with walking safaris.

Wilderness immersion: Ultimate wilderness experience with minimal infrastructure. Sleep under the stars in remote areas away from permanent camps.

Walking safaris: Fly camping is typically combined with walking safaris. Walk during the day, camp in remote areas at night. Authentic adventure.

Basic facilities: Dome tents with camp beds, shared bathroom facilities, and campfire meals. Rustic but rewarding experience for adventurous travelers.

What to Expect

Canvas walls: Tents have canvas walls that provide ventilation and allow wildlife sounds to be heard. This is part of the authentic tented camp experience.

En-suite bathrooms: Most permanent tented camps have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers. Mobile camps may have shared facilities depending on the camp.

Power: Many camps have limited electricity, often provided by generators or solar. Power may be available only during certain hours. Bring power banks.

Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is increasingly common but often slow and unreliable. Don't expect consistent connectivity. Many camps are intentionally disconnected.

Tented Camp vs Lodge

Connection to nature: Tented camps provide closer connection to nature with canvas walls and wildlife sounds. Lodges are more enclosed and insulated.

Atmosphere: Tented camps have more intimate, rustic atmosphere. Lodges feel more like traditional hotels. Choose based on your preference.

Temperature: Tents can be colder at night and warmer during day. Lodges typically have better insulation and temperature control.

Wildlife in camp: Tented camps often have more wildlife in and around camp. Lodges are more secure but may still have wildlife visits.

Choosing a Tented Camp

Location: Consider the camp's location relative to wildlife areas. Some camps are inside parks, others outside. Inside parks offer better wildlife access.

Season: Mobile camps move seasonally. Permanent camps operate year-round. Consider your travel dates when choosing.

Comfort level: Tented camps range from basic to luxury. Choose based on your comfort preferences and budget.

Group size: Some camps are better for families, others for couples. Consider who you're traveling with when choosing.
