Wildebeest migration across plains

Great Migration

Masai Mara vs Serengeti — Which Wins for the Great Migration?

The same animals, two different stages. Here is how Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti compare for the world's greatest wildlife show.

Two Sides of the Same Coin

The Great Migration is an 1,800-mile circular journey that straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border. The Serengeti (Tanzania) hosts the migration for roughly 10 months of the year. The Masai Mara (Kenya) hosts it for 2-3 months when herds cross the Mara River.

Choosing between them depends on when you travel, what you want to see, and what kind of experience you prefer.

Size & Scale

The Serengeti is vast — 14,750 km² — roughly 10 times the size of the Masai Mara. This means animals are more spread out, but it also means you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. The sense of wilderness is profound.

The Masai Mara is compact — 1,510 km². Wildlife is more concentrated, and predator sightings are frequent. However, the Mara can feel crowded during peak season, with dozens of vehicles converging on a single sighting.

The Mara River Crossings

The most dramatic moments of the Great Migration happen at the Mara River. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a chaos of dust, noise, and panic. It is one of nature's most visceral spectacles.

In Tanzania: The Grumeti River crossings (June-July) are less crowded but equally dramatic. The Mara River crossings in the far north (July-October) share the river with Kenya.

In Kenya: The Mara River crossings (July-October) are world-famous but draw massive crowds. On busy days, 100+ vehicles line the riverbank — an unfortunate distraction from the natural drama.

When to Go Where

Serengeti Highlights

  • • Jan–Mar: Calving season (Ndutu) — 500,000 births
  • • Apr–Jun: Western corridor migration
  • • Jun–Jul: Grumeti River crossings
  • • Jul–Oct: Northern Serengeti / Mara River
  • • Nov–Dec: Return south, short rains

Masai Mara Highlights

  • • Jul–Oct: Mara River crossings
  • • Aug–Sep: Peak predator action
  • • Year-round: Big cats (highest density in Africa)
  • • Note: Migration only present 2-3 months

Crowds & Vehicle Numbers

This is where the Serengeti wins decisively. Tanzania's larger area absorbs tourism far better than the compact Masai Mara. Even in peak season, you can find quiet corners of the Serengeti where it is just you, the guide, and a million wildebeest.

The Masai Mara's conservancies (Mara North, Olare Motorogi, Naboisho) offer exclusivity but at a premium. In the main reserve, vehicle numbers are unregulated and can ruin the experience.

The Verdict

Choose the Serengeti if:

  • You want the full migration experience (10 months of the year)
  • You value space, solitude, and vast landscapes
  • You want to combine with Ngorongoro, Zanzibar, or Kilimanjaro
  • You prefer fewer vehicles and more wilderness

Choose the Masai Mara if:

  • You are traveling in July–October specifically for river crossings
  • You want the highest predator density in Africa
  • You prefer shorter, more concentrated game drives
  • You are combining with other Kenya experiences (Amboseli, Samburu)
