Tanzania vs Kenya Safari — Which is Right for You?

A no-nonsense comparison of East Africa's two greatest safari destinations, from wildlife density and park landscapes to cost and crowd levels.

Quick Comparison

Both Tanzania and Kenya offer world-class safaris, but the experiences differ significantly.Tanzania is home to the vast Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and more remote southern parks. Kenya offers the Masai Mara, Amboseli (with Kilimanjaro views), and easier access from Nairobi.

If you want sheer scale, exclusivity, and the complete Great Migration circuit, Tanzania wins. If you prefer concentrated wildlife in a smaller area with easier logistics, Kenya is hard to beat.

Many experienced safari-goers visit both — but if you must choose one for your first trip, here is how they stack up.

Wildlife & National Parks

Tanzania's Northern Circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara — covers a staggering 25,000+ km². The Serengeti alone is larger than the entire Masai Mara ecosystem. This scale meanswildlife is dispersed but prolific, and you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.

Kenya's Masai Mara is smaller and more concentrated. The open grasslands make predator spotting easier, and the Mara River crossings here are arguably the most dramatic in Africa. However, the Mara can feel crowded during peak season — up to 300 vehicles have been recorded at a single crossing.

Tanzania's edge: Ngorongoro Crater (a UNESCO World Heritage caldera with guaranteed Big Five sightings), Tarangire's elephant herds, and the remote Selous (Nyerere) and Ruaha parks in the south.Kenya's edge: Amboseli's elephant herds framed by Kilimanjaro, Samburu's unique species, and easier road access.

The Great Migration

The Great Migration is an 1,800-mile circular journey shared between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. The majority of the migration — roughly 10 out of 12 months — takes place in Tanzania.

Tanzania hosts the calving season (January–March), the western corridor movement (April–June), and the Grumeti River crossings (June–July). Kenya only hosts the Mara River crossings (July–October), when herds briefly cross into the Masai Mara before returning south.

Crowds & Exclusivity

Tanzania has significantly fewer vehicles per square kilometer than Kenya. In the Serengeti, even during peak season, it is possible to find areas with no other vehicles in sight. The Serengeti's sheer size absorbs tourists far more effectively than the compact Masai Mara.

Kenya's Masai Mara, by contrast, has a higher vehicle density and more fenced conservancies. While private conservancies like Mara North offer exclusivity, they come at a premium. Tanzania's private concessions (such as Grumeti and Loliondo) are larger and less commercialized.

Cost Comparison

Tanzania is generally 20-40% more expensive than Kenya for equivalent safari experiences. This is due to higher park fees (Serengeti and Ngorongoro are among the most expensive parks in Africa), greater distances between parks, and a more developed luxury lodge sector.

However, Tanzania offers more budget-friendly options than many realize. Camping safaris in the Serengeti, shared group departures, and local operators can bring costs down significantly.See our complete cost breakdown.
