As the short rains end, the herds begin moving northwest toward the Western Corridor and Grumeti Reserve. This is a quieter period with excellent game viewing as the herds spread across vast areas.

The long rains begin in March, making some roads challenging but offering lush landscapes and dramatic skies. This is an excellent time for photographers seeking dramatic weather conditions.

The migration reaches the Grumeti River in the Western Corridor. Dramatic river crossings occur as the herds attempt to cross crocodile-infested waters. This is less crowded than the later Mara River crossings but equally spectacular.

June marks the beginning of the dry season and the start of peak tourism. Weather improves daily, and wildlife viewing becomes outstanding.

The migration herds reach the northern Serengeti and begin crossing the Mara River into Kenya's Masai Mara. This is the most famous period of the migration — dramatic river crossings with crocodiles waiting in the water.
