What You'll See

Leopards: Night drives offer excellent leopard viewing. Leopards are primarily nocturnal and more active at night. Seeing a leopard hunting or moving through the darkness is special.

Hyenas: Spotted hyenas are highly active at night. You may see them hunting, scavenging, or moving to their dens. Their vocalizations create an authentic African night atmosphere.

Servals: These elusive cats are primarily nocturnal and rarely seen during day drives. Night drives offer the best chance to see these beautiful spotted cats.

Other nocturnal animals: Bushbabies, genets, civets, porcupines, and various small carnivores. The night reveals a completely different cast of characters.

The Experience

Evening departure: Night drives typically depart around 6:00-7:00 PM, just after sunset. The drive lasts 2-3 hours, returning to camp by 9:00-10:00 PM.

Spotlight technique: Guides use powerful spotlights to scan the darkness. The red filter on spotlights is less disturbing to wildlife and doesn't affect their night vision.

Sensory experience: Night drives engage all senses — the sounds of hyenas calling, the smell of the African night, the feeling of the cool air. It's a completely different experience from day drives.

Sundowner drinks: Many night drives include sundowner drinks before the drive begins. Watch the sunset while enjoying a drink before heading into the darkness.

Best Locations

Tarangire National Park: Night drives are permitted in designated areas. Excellent for leopards and hyenas. Baobab trees create dramatic backdrops at night.

Lake Manyara National Park: Night drives are permitted in certain areas. Good for tree-climbing leopards and diverse nocturnal wildlife.

Serengeti (specific areas): Night drives are permitted in designated private concessions within the Serengeti ecosystem. Not allowed in the main national park.

Selous/Nyerere: Night drives are permitted in certain areas. Excellent for diverse nocturnal wildlife in remote wilderness settings.

What to Expect

Cold temperatures: Night drives can be cold, especially during dry season. Bring warm layers including a jacket, hat, and gloves.

Less predictable: Night wildlife viewing is less predictable than day drives. Some nights are quiet, others are incredibly active. Patience is key.

Photography challenges: Night photography is challenging. Bring a camera with good low-light performance and consider a flash. Don't expect perfect photos.

Safety considerations: Night drives are conducted by experienced guides with safety protocols. Follow guide instructions at all times.

Photography Tips

Fast lens: A lens with a wide aperture (f/2.8 or wider) is essential for night photography. More light reaches the sensor in low-light conditions.

High ISO: Don't be afraid to use high ISO settings. Modern cameras handle high ISO well. Better to have a grainy photo than no photo.

Flash photography: Flash can be used but should be used sparingly. It can disturb wildlife. Ask your guide before using flash.

Steady hands: Use image stabilization or a monopod. Camera shake is more noticeable in low-light conditions.

Cost and Booking

Cost: Night drives typically cost $50-100 per person in addition to regular safari costs. Prices vary by location and operator.

Booking: Book night drives in advance, especially during peak season. Space is limited and not all lodges offer night drives.

Minimum age: Some operators have minimum age requirements for night drives. Check with your operator if traveling with children.

Weather dependent: Night drives may be cancelled due to heavy rain or poor visibility. Have a backup plan.
